How Long Does It Take To Receive The Ashes After Cremation?

The cremation process depends on several factors, so the time needed to obtain ashes following cremation varies. How long, though, until the family receives the ashes after cremation? The cremation process can take a few hours to several days, depending on the reason and manner of death, in addition to whether or not a medical examiner was present.

Cremation Following A Service

We at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home have found that many people find it comforting to have a set date in mind for receiving the ashes of a loved one who has passed away. After the ritual, the cremation itself takes place. After the cremation service, the deceased's body is typically placed in the cremation chamber. If not, right away, it'll indeed occur the same day.

The crematorium will let you know the day and hour of the cremation if it is a direct cremation (i.e., no service or funeral).

When Will You Receive The Ashes After A Cremation

After cremation, the ashes undergo several procedures. The ashes need to cool initially. The ashes must be taken from the cremation chamber and allowed to cool for one to two hours because the chamber can reach incredibly high temperatures (up to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit).

After that, the crematory will remove any metal items from the ashes. This comprises prosthetics, orthodontic devices, and dental crowns. The crematorium employees remove these objects from the ashes using a strong magnet.

The ash is then ground into a finer powder using a machine. Doing this removes any larger bone fragments, and their dissemination is facilitated. The crematory will then place the ashes in a temporary urn that will be available for you to pick up.

Collect The Cremation Certificate After You Receive The Ashes

The crematory will issue you a cremation certification once you receive the ashes. This record includes the name of the person and the cremation date. This certificate needs to be kept safe. The certificate must be presented at the airport if you relocate or transport the ashes overseas.
