Funeral Etiquette 101
Funerals are sensitive affairs full of sorrow. This means people are emotional and can be easily upset, which is why it is essential to respect the funeral etiquette strictly. You don't want to hurt people who are grieving. At Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home, we suggest you consider these aspects when attending a funeral.
1. Choose Appropriate Clothes
Don't wear shiny or colorful clothes at a funeral. Wear black clothing without conspicuous designs. Ensure your garments are appropriate and respectful. Women's makeup should be minimal and simple. Avoid casualwear like shorts or t-shirts, and make sure that all children attending are appropriately dressed as well.
2. Arrive At The Funeral Service Early
It's a wise decision to attend a funeral service at least 15-20 minutes before the actual scheduled time. Check the road conditions and traveling time before you leave your house. This is to ensure that you don’t arrive at the last minute or after the funeral has begun.
3. Sit At The Back Of The Room
Even if you're eventually late, try to ensure your arrival doesn't create much disruption. Stand behind the rest of the attendees or wait outside the door. Avoid taking a seat at the front or in a packed row, as this will draw more attention and seem insensitive.
4. Keep Your Mobile On Silent Or Switch It Off
You must either turn off your cell or set it on silent to ensure calls or texts don't interrupt the funeral service. You shouldn’t answer any calls or reply to any messages during the service, as this will seem disrespectful. It's a better idea to put the mobile in your pocket and not look at it until the service is complete.
